Defining Press Set Up
Many sheet-fed or web-press printing locations are not aware of or conform to shop standards or guidelines for printing processes. Going further, if a standard or guideline is in place, it may very well be obsolete as ink, fountain solution, blankets, image setter or CTP device and RIP. And, a number of variables may have changed since the development of these standards or guidelines.
With the introduction of low-tack and uni-tack inks, the need for standards becomes even more important as these newer inks do not allow the latitude that the press operator once had to affect color. This means that the inks are easier to print with, but harder to move or push more color into the sheet. This shop standard or guideline should consist of a high and low or a pass/fail for Density, Tone Value Increase or Dot Gain, Trap, Print Contrast, and Hue Error and Greyness. Adding to these values, the QC personnel should also have CIE L*a*b* values or LcH values of the primary and secondary colors. With these values optimized, any press run can be checked against the standard and shown to be in or out of specification. Also, when new inks are put into the press, they can be checked for consistency compared to the tolerances that were defined when configuring the shop standard.
